Car carrier driving on a highway

Auto Transport Broker vs. Carrier: What's the Difference?

Who actually moves your car, who arranges it, and what to check before you sign anything.

Two different roles

A carrier owns or operates the trucks that move vehicles. A broker arranges the shipment by matching it with a carrier. Many customers will work with both during one move.

Why people use a broker

A broker can search a wider range of trucks than any single carrier runs. That is useful on less common routes or when your dates are tight.

What to verify

Whichever you choose, check the essentials before paying anything:

  • Look up the company's USDOT or MC number with the FMCSA
  • Ask for the carrier's insurance certificate
  • Read the cancellation terms
  • Find out exactly when each payment is due

Watch for payment red flags

Be wary if someone pressures you to pay by wire transfer or to use contact details that don't match the company's official website. Call the company on a number you found yourself.
