What it is

The bill of lading is the document the driver uses to record your vehicle's condition and the terms of the shipment. It's both a receipt and an inspection record.

At pickup

Walk around the vehicle with the driver. Make sure every existing mark is noted, then sign and keep your copy. Don't sign a blank or incomplete form.

At delivery

Compare the vehicle with your copy, ideally in good light. If it's dark, use a flashlight. Note any new damage on the form before you sign.

If you find damage

Write it on the form, photograph it, and report it straight away. Claims become harder if the delivery report has been signed as clean.
